REY Soap, from the series Monarchs of Popular Culture

Jabón REY es una serie de fotografías que capturan, a través de la técnica de cianotipia, una sorprendente similitud tonal entre el azul Prusia y uno de los grandes íconos de la cultura popular: el Jabón REY. Este proyecto entrelaza elementos destacados de monarcas creados por una cultura que carece de monarquía, como es el caso de Colombia, recreando así una serie de “reyes” que liderarían y marcarían a toda una cultura desde la cotidianidad del hogar y lo popular. 

Sin embargo, en la actualidad, estos símbolos se ven amenazados por el exceso de importaciones extranjeras, lo que ha generado una pérdida significativa de la memoria colectiva, la identidad cultural y lo autóctono. La fotografía emerge como testigo y cronista de estos cambios, documentando un panorama que quizás ya no sea el mismo en el futuro.

Jabón REY is a photographic series that, through the cyanotype technique, captures a striking tonal resemblance between Prussian blue and one of the great icons of popular culture: Jabón REY. This project intertwines emblematic elements of monarchs imagined by a culture without a monarchy—such is the case of Colombia—thus recreating a lineage of “kings” who would lead and define an entire culture from within the realm of domesticity and the popular. 

Today, however, these symbols are threatened by the influx of foreign imports, which has led to a significant loss of collective memory, cultural identity, and what is native. Photography emerges here as both witness and chronicler of these transformations, documenting a landscape that may no longer be the same in the future.
